There are three levels of Culinary classes offered throughout the school year at Lincoln Southwest. At the beginning of the term, students have to learn the safety of being in the kitchen and basic cooking knowledge. Culinary class makes different varieties of food like breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks and desserts.
“My favorite thing that we have made is alfredo pasta because it was super good,” senior Mikayla Vauiso said. “I am most excited to make crème brûlée because it is one of my favorite desserts.”
In each group, students have different jobs. They get their recipe on paper and then they gather all their ingredients to make the food items. Students are expected to clean their area and dishes before the end of class. Some groups do the dishes while the food is baking or resting and others do the dishes after the food is ready.
“I like to do the dishes while the item is baking or resting,’’ senior Sutton Classen said. “Then the dishes are done and it is less of a mess once we are done cooking.’’
Culinary has coffee days where they make coffee through their coffee shop, impresso espresso. They serve breakfast foods, cookies and yogurt parfaits for the teachers. For coffee days, teachers can put an order in and Culinary students make the food then deliver it to the teachers in the morning.
“On coffee days, I like to bring the coffees to teachers and people who work in the school,” Classen said. “Our class is small so we have more space while making the food and it is nice.’’
