The Lincoln Southwest boys’ basketball team is having a successful season. So far, their record is 16-1, and they have six games left before districts and state.
“We are off to a really great start, it’s the best start in Southwest boys’ basketball history. We hope we can build on it and finish strong,” Coach Bahe said. “We are not the tallest team in the state, but we are really talented and fast. So we have to rebound better than we do.”
After last year’s season finishing 15-10, the boys are playing better and have five more wins then they did at this time last year. This season they, are projected to be the number one seed at the Nebraska state tournament according to NebPrep’s Coaches Poll.
“I think state is going to be a really big thing for us, as a team. I feel like we really all need to come together because we know teamwork will get us there,” senior Shaqkobi Kerr said. “I think our team is sharing the ball and moving in transition really well. We are all in a real brothership right now.”
Kerr leads the team in rebounds averaging 6.0 per game. Seniors Makkiah and Uzziah Sanders are the playmakers; they lead the team in scoring, averaging 20+ points per game.
“I prepared for the season by staying consistent in the gym and on the court. I worked mostly on ball-handling, shooting, and conditioning,” junior Dakari Wilson said. “As a team we focused on getting stronger and faster, we also paid attention to detail and took recovery seriously.”
Wilson strives to be a leader on the team. He falls into the top three in every statistical category on the team. However, he is known best for his sharp-shooting abilities, as he is top 10 in the state with 32 three-point shots made.
