On Saturday, Jan. 17, the LSW show choir had their first competition of the season at Lincoln High School. In total this season, show choir will compete in five competitions, and will have an exhibition performance at Southwest Showdown, the competition hosted at LSW.
“It was really cool to place second in the prep-division. It was our very first competition, and none of us had ever done show choir before,” Emergence show choir member, freshman Edie Ulrich said. “ I think we did really well on our choreography and our vocals.”
Each show choir placed high in their division, with Emergence placing second and Ambience placing third, both in the prep-division. Resonance was the overall first runner-up, with other accolades given to specific people or groups within the show choir, such as senior Joshua Carl winning best soloist, senior Jeremiah Keele winning best performer and the Echo show band winning best band.
“It was definitely an honor to win the award for best soloist. This is my first year having a competition solo. The last two years I’ve been an understudy, so the only time I got to perform would be the early performance at the premiere. So, it was great to be able to get out there and show my talent,” senior Joshua Carl said. “I think we did really well on engaging the audience into the show that is just Tom and Jerry. It’s all silly and fun and games. It’s just a simple cat and mouse chasing each other around, and it’s fun to see the audience just get so involved in the story.”
LSW’s Show choirs next competition is The Summit at Lincoln Standing Bear High School on Saturday, Jan. 24. Each show choir will perform at different times, with Emergence at 9:20 a.m., Ambience at 11:10 a.m. and Resonance at 4:00 p.m.
“I feel pretty confident about our next competition. We’re going to work really hard during class time and during practices to be really prepared for this competition,” sophomore Ayana Taalo said. “Show choir has really taught me how to be a hard worker, because if one person in the group isn’t trying, then it brings down the whole group. Show choir is all about having energy and breath support, and the best way that you can get through those things is just pushing through.”
