Coffee with Counselors has become a new activity at LSW during the 2025-2026 school year to benefit students who plan to apply to Ivy League colleges or other selective admission programs. Some topics that have been covered include getting to know the Common Application, admissions and general information about Ivy League colleges.
“Coffee with Counselors is something that we’ve started up to try and bring different people to come and talk to students to put different issues and opportunities in front of students, and to do it in a way that feels a little more light-hearted and fun,” Ms. Amanda Tomes said. “It’s just a way to approach those things and make it feel less stressful. It also gives that opportunity to have these laid-back conversations, as opposed to telling students what they should be doing and avoiding some of those high stress things that can come with those expectations.”
Coffee with Counselors is open to all students from any grade level who are seeking higher education opportunities at prestigious college programs. Additionally, each session will have free food and beverages for students.
“I have genuinely learned so much new information from these sessions that I feel like I probably wouldn’t have learned until it was too late,” sophomore Ayana Taalo said. “My favorite session so far has been the one where the Massachusetts Institute of Tech(MIT) student told us a bunch of general information about Ivy League colleges.”
The next session is on Friday, Oct. 31 in the A100 forum during second block and it is about dual credit programs at LSW. If students wish to attend sessions, they should pay attention to their grade-level’s Google Classroom for any updates.
“I would recommend Coffee with Counselors to students just because it is something that’s intended to be a little more relaxed, even though these are big things that students are thinking about and planning for,” Tomes said. “And who doesn’t enjoy some free food and beverages?”
