Starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 24, Student Council (StuCo) will present the Color Run, a two lap run around Southwest High School where chalk powder is thrown at individuals throughout different parts of the course. Admissions are $5 and will be set up by the starting line at the front of LSW. Additionally, free sunglasses will be handed out after paying to participate.
“I think it will be fun to support the school with my friends,” junior Sydney Holsten said. “The coolest part is the aftermath, coming to wear white and then at the end you are kind of a mess, but you’re a mess with friends.”
Individuals are encouraged to wear all white for the powder to show up. All ages are welcome to run. All the proceeds made from this event will go to the Make-a-Wish Foundation.
“We love Make-a-Wish, it’s a really good organization. We had a Make-a-Wish kid here at Southwest last year, so we feel really motivated to make other kids’ wishes,” junior Mackenzie Steinbrook, StuCo communications director, said.
StuCo has worked on expanding their outreach to the community to encourage individuals to attend.
“We were really working on word of mouth advertising,” Steinbrook said. “I have siblings in elementary school and middle school so I’ve advertised to their friends.”
They have notified LSW clubs and activities about the event as well as contacted sources around Lincoln.
“Last year, the attendance was good, but not great. Our goal is to try and get more kids because we think it’s a super kid-friendly event,” Steinbrook said. “We’ve posted to Macaroni KID, which is a Facebook page to advertise local kid events so we are doing stuff like that to try and get more attendance.”
There will be a shaved ice truck for individuals who would like a frozen treat but StuCo also will offer popsicles and water for free.
“I love it, honestly,” Steinbrook said. “I love seeing all sorts of people and different clubs and activities, having a good time, getting messy and having fun.”
