On Wednesday, Nov. 8, at 8:30 a.m. in the auditorium, Southwest held a Signing Day. Signing Day was for senior athletes to sign a letter of intent to play a collegiate sport at a D1 or D2 college. This was the first of four signings that will be held throughout the 2023-2024 school year.
Senior soccer player Maddie Schmeling signed a letter of intent. She planned to attend Wayne State College in Wayne, Nebraska to play womens’ soccer.
“I’ve played soccer my whole life so I didn’t think I could just stop now,” Schmeling said. “I wanted to keep going, and Wayne had a really good program. I think it’s a place I can fit in.”
Along with Schmeling, 10 other seniors signed their letters of intent in front of their families and friends. The coaches introduced each student with a small speech to highlight their accomplishments.
“Really, this is an opportunity for us to spotlight and promote our kids,” athletic director Mr. Andrew Sherman said. “It’s great for us to support them and show them that we care.”
A group picture of all the students was taken after the signings were done. Then, the space was open for the friends and teammates of the students to take pictures and celebrate.
