With the week coming to a close, spring sports are starting to wrap up tryouts. Spring sports consist of baseball, boys soccer, girls soccer, track and field, unified track and field, girls tennis and boys golf.

“I think what excites me the most is the amount of talent between the seniors, juniors, and sophomores,” baseball head coach Mitch Vernon said. “They have a desire to excel which is really promising for us.”

Varsity baseball is looking to improve on their 19-12 season last year. The team lost seven starters and has three starters returning.

“There are a lot of younger guys who have to step up and fill some roles of the people that left,” senior infielder Cam Newell said. “For the guys that are returning, we’re gonna have to taken an even bigger role to make sure the team does what we need to win games.

Newell hit three homeruns in the summer legion baseball season.

The varsity boys soccer team has a lot of momentum going into the 2022 season. The team went 17-1 losing to Omaha South in the state championship game.

“We came off a really good season last year making it to the State Championship game,” sophomore Tanner Novosad said. “We are hoping to make it back to State and win this time.”

Last year, Novosad played alongside his older brother, Carter Novosad. Tanner is looking to have a strong sophomore season. He had five goals along with three assists in his freshman year.

“Last year was an amazing year for our team. We all loved playing alongside each other,”sophomore Kensi Hazen said. “I’m hoping to make the same memories this year.”

Hazen played on the JV girls tennis team. The team finished second in city with only losing two matches.

I’m super excited to see what friendships everybody makes and to see our successes,” senior Allie Peterson said. “We strive to improve as a community and be more inclusive.”

This will be Peterson’s second year on the unified track team.

The teams will be finalized during the weekend and practices will start as soon as teams are settled.
