Students who can prove their proficiency in English and a secondary language on the Standard-based Measurement of Proficiency (STAMP) test at UNL can apply for The Seal of Biliteracy. Testings take place Saturday, March 2nd and Saturday, June 1st.
Receiving the seal demonstrates skills that are valuable to future employers and college admission offices. Lincoln Southwest students must fill out the interest form found on their graduating year’s Google Classroom to apply for the STAMP test. After submitting the form, Mrs. Rebecca Christenson, one of Lincoln Southwest’s world language teachers, will contact students more information about the STAMP test.
“This is a great opportunity to register for the STAMP test they’re giving at UNL in June because it’s free for LPS students,” Christenson said. “However, taking the STAMP test isn’t the only way students can provide evidence of proficiency. At Southwest, students can also take the AP Spanish exam.”
There are a series of languages students can test for such as Mandarin, French, German, Vietnamese, Korean and more. For the full list visit Nebraska Languages and Assessments. On these tests, students will display their listening, reading, speaking and writing skills.
“I took the AP Spanish exam at Southwest to apply for the seal,” senior Ellery Potts said. “It feels nice to have something to represent my skills and I think it’s a good opportunity because there are many other Spanish speakers in the U.S.”
More information regarding the seal’s award process, proficiency levels and assessment requirements can be found on the Nebraska Seal of Biliteracy website.
