On March 2, the Lincoln Southwest boys basketball team lost to Gretna in double overtime in the District Tournament 59-54.

“The guys, the team, did everything we asked them to do, empty the tank and played really hard and fought,” assistant coach Justin Schreiber said. “You know, sometimes it just doesn’t go your way.”

The team finished the season 16-7 overall making it one of the best seasons since 2009. The team had a five-game win streak going before this final loss.

Although they lost the game, senior Ben Hunzeker broke the steals record with 72 and finished his career points with 727 points. In addition, junior Rylan Smith set the all-time free throw record with 143. Progress is slow and steady, and according to junior Lukas Helms, they’ll be able to make it better next season.

“We’ve got to learn from our mistakes and move on to next year,” Lukas said. “Sucks because the seniors won’t be with us next season.”
