The Huskers’ first season opener against Akron was cancelled due to persistent thunderstorms.

The Husker game was officially cancelled around 10 p.m Saturday night, due to rain and lightning being in the forecast all night. Akron kicked off before being stopped to due lightning. After each lightning strike the game was delayed for 30 minutes.

“I think they should have cancelled the game earlier, because it wasted a lot of people’s time who were waiting for the game to be played,” senior Grace Chacon said.

The Huskers would have played their first game under Head Coach Scott Frost, who also played for the Huskers during college in 1995-1997. Fans were excited to see what the athletes could do under the new coach.

“I don’t watch Husker football very much, but I knew people were really hyped to see what Frost could do,” senior Alicia Mcafee said.

Thousands of fans stayed, and tried to wait out the thunderstorm and rain. However, they were told to leave and head to shelter.

“It was sad to hear that their first game was cancelled, but I think that everything happens for a reason and maybe it was a good thing it was cancelled,” Mcafee said.

According to the Journal Star, a makeup game is unlikely because both of the team’s bye weeks don’t line up, and the only other choice they have would be to play in December on either a conference championship weekend or between that date.

Huskers played Colorado this Saturday Sept. 8 at 2:30pm.
