At 6 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 16, Southwest Student Council (StuCo) hosted Senior Sunrise in parking lot C by the tennis courts.
“It was fun. I was excited to see my friends and get to do activities with them in a relaxed environment,” senior Megan Baugh said. “It’s an experience where it will just be me and my class.”
Yard games such as ladderball, spikeball and cornhole were provided by StuCo but if seniors wanted to play pickleball they needed to bring their own paddles. Seniors were also encouraged to bring their own blankets to watch the sun rise, which was set for 6:39 am. Free donuts were provided by StuCo members and along with that Tom’s Coffee Truck was there from 6 – 7:30 a.m. so attendees were able to purchase coffee.
“I’ve been to every senior event that we’ve had for StuCo and now that I am a senior it’s really fun that it was for me this time,” senior Jada Frank, StuCo Vice President, said. “It’s nice to see how we’ve grown through the event because now it looks completely different.”
Senior Sunrise is a budding tradition at LSW that StuCo has hosted for the past three years. Originally, Senior Sunrise started at the end of the year, but through the growth of the event it was changed to the beginning of the year. There was estimated to be 200 seniors in attendance, making it the highest turn out since the event began.
“I think Senior Sunrise is really cool because it’s the start of our final year and sunrise signifies the start of the day,” Baugh said. “I love how at the end of the year we also do Senior Sunset to close out the year.”
Towards the end of the year, Student Council will also plan to host Senior Sunset, to bring the year to a close for the Class of 2025.
