On Sept. 19, Southwest will host its first blood drive of the 2022-2023 school year from 8:30 a.m. – 2:45 p.m.

“We are in a national blood shortage so I think it’s really good to give my blood so I can save people,” senior Frannie Kiser said. “I personally think it’s important because I like to help people.”

After previous blood drive director Mr. Mark Watt retired, Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) has taken over the blood drive.

“A big part of HOSA is volunteering,” blood drive director Mr. Pete Stone said. “A lot of what we do is trying to help people.”

The blood drive is held every term. When donating blood, individuals need to meet certain requirements to make sure they are able to give blood safely. Students must be 16 and meet general guidelines to be eligible to donate blood.

“It’s important for high school students to donate blood to make a positive impact on (their) community,” Stone said. “There always seems like we’re always in dire need of blood and so doing something positive and helping out your community teaches kids really good lessons.”

The next blood drive will be held term two. If a student has any questions they can talk to or email Mr. Stone.
