Lincoln Southwest boys varsity basketball fell to #8 ranked Papillion-La Vista South 73-55 on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2020 at Lincoln Southwest High School.

However, not all was bad for the Silver Hawks. Senior guard, Jayson Wakefield had a career and season-high 19 points against the Titans. His scoring came from several different avenues such as cutting to the basket, free throws, three pointers, and more.

“I just have a lot of trust in my teammates,” said Wakefield. “Once I did that they would make the play easy for me.”

In addition, this scoring outburst comes from a new mentality Wakefield is trying to implement into his game the second half of the season.

“This weekend I have a lot more confidence in myself,” said Wakefield. “The first part of the season I was not as confident as I wanted to be and things have just kind of clicked recently.”

Even with the senior guard’s career night the Hawks were unable to come out on top due to something that has hurt the team all season: one bad quarter.

LSW played a strong first and second quarter going to halftime down only two points. However, in the third quarter, Southwest was outscored 23-14 and dug into a hole for the rest of the game.

“One of the major things we focus on is playing for 32 minutes every game and we are kind of inconsistent in doing that,” said Wakefield. “We usually only play for three quarters instead of four, and so that one quarter always gets us. The other teams go on a run and it’s hard to get back.”

The Hawks will now move on to next week to play Lincoln Northeast High School at LSW on Friday, Jan. 24, 2020, with tip off at 7:30 p.m. This will be the second time the Silver Hawks play the Rockets this season. In the first matchup between the two teams, Southwest fell to Northeast 69-72 in the HAC tournament.
