“Heartstopper” is a four-book, ongoing series of graphic novels written by Alice Oseman. The series follows two boys, Charlie Spring and Nick Nelson, as they develop an unlikely friendship that could lead to something more.

A year prior to the start of the first book, Charlie was outed at school and is just starting to regain control in his life. He loves playing the drums, reading and dogs. He is also a fast runner. Nick is a popular jock who encourages Charlie to put his speed to use on the rugby field. Together, the boys navigate the confusing worlds of highschool and romance. The book is a wonderful representation of the modern day’s youth.

The story is captivating and it is impossible to put the books down. As the relationship between Charlie and Nick progresses, the reader will hold their breath, waiting to see what happens next. The series is a fast and fluid read because it is authentic. Oseman is able to weave characters of all identities into the story, without it feeling forced.

Readers should not be intimidated just because it is a graphic novel. The illustrations are gorgeous and being able to see what the author pictured her characters to look like makes the read easier, requiring less effort in imagining the story.

There are many bonus features in the back of each book including illustrations of the characters’ typical wardrobes, cards that give a brief description of important characters, and even a few short love stories of minor characters that we wouldn’t otherwise see.

While a reader may not relate directly to the characters, the books allow them to empathize with others who might. Readers may have friends who are a part of the LGBTQ+ community and inclusive books allow them to connect with them through reading.

There are a few sensitive topics, such as eating disorders and self-harm, broached in a tactful way. Heartstoper makes people feel heard, as all the greatest works of art do.

There was a Netflix show made based on Oseman’s series, released last year. Nick is played by Kit Connor and Charlie by Joe Locke. It is an amazing book-to-movie adaptation. The details match completely, down to the backpack Charlie wears. The script matches almost to the word.

The fifth book of the story is set to release Nov. 9, 2023 and is highly anticipated.
