Pottery is a term long class at Lincoln Southwest. There are four levels of pottery offered throughout the school year. Students in any grade level can start by taking Pottery 1 and move on to the next levels after they have completed and passed Pottery 1.
“So far in Pottery I have learned creativity and imagination,” sophomore Mawada Adam said. “I joined because it is a fun class and you get to create things using your imagination.”
In the Pottery class, students learn how to make different creations out of clay. So far as of September, Pottery 1 students have made different types of pots such as pinch pots and coil pots. Throughout the class, students will build on their skills by making more difficult projects as they advance to higher levels.
“I have made a coil pot and a pinch pot so far in Pottery,” sophomore Tycen Keller-Phillps said. “My favorite part of the class is making things with my friends and having a good time with them.”
Before they can start their projects they have to wedge the clay by kneading it until there are no air bubbles left in the clay. Students have to be careful during this process to ensure that they remove all of the air bubbles before they start their project.
“The hardest part of the class is wedging the clay and making sure it is the right texture,” Adam said. “My favorite part of Pottery is also wedging the clay.”
Students that are interested in joining Pottery 1 should talk with their counselor to add it to their schedule as an elective class.
