At Lincoln Southwest, Unified activities join students with and without disabilities to participate in clubs, activities and classes together. All someone needs to do to get involved is grab an application from the front office and fill it out. On the application individuals will be able to select each activity that interests them on the application.
“I think other students should join Unified activities if they can because it’s just honestly really fun,” senior Jaylee Carlson said. “I love getting to work with all of the students that we have in our Unified program, it’s just really enjoyable to get together and do all of the different activities with one another.”
Unified club helps students of all abilities connect and form friendships with one another. So far, LSW has 10 unified activities that are open to students. These activities include unified club, council, bowling, track & field, choir, P.E., book club, yearbook, and mass media.
“I love the inclusive environment of all of the Unified activities,” senior Claire Bruns said, “We all circle up and we play games and do fun activities with one another.”
LSW upholds an inclusive environment where all students have an equal opportunity no matter their abilities. If someone would like more information about unified activities they can contact the unified activities coordinator Brandi Benson via her email [email protected] or find her in room C112.
“I think there are too many amazing people in this world to not learn everybody’s stories, whether that’s through a Unified activity or any club or sport we have at Southwest,” Benson said. “The things you can learn from being around people who you think are just like you, but learning that they bring different stories, perspectives and personalities is immeasurable, because that’s how we make the world a better place, by learning about people and learning the ways we can help people.”
