Car Fire in Southwest Parking Lot

At around 10:31 p.m. on Feb. 4, police encountered a student-owned vehicle ablaze within the Lincoln Southwest High School parking lot.

According to 1011 KOLN News, the vehicle contained a variety of fireworks. In the moments leading up to the incident the student was throwing lit fireworks out of the windows of the vehicle.

During the incident, students were leaving the campus after choir practice had ended according to a choir student.

“I mean yeah it was cool to see,” senior Courtney Holsteen said. “I just feel bad for the parents of that car though.”

Allegedly one of the lit fireworks rebounded back into the vehicle and ignited the remaining fireworks within the vehicle according to 1011 KOLN News. Soon after, the vehicle was engulfed in flames and emergency services were called.

“I think that incident is an example of why we have a lot of safety expectations at our school,” Principal John Matzen said. “That’s why we don’t want students with lighters or matches, not because every time it’s going to lead to something bad, but because there’s potential for those incidents.”

There were no reported injuries, although the 2006 Chevy Malibu was destroyed. As of now the teen has been cited for the incident.
