ASVAB Testing at Southwest

Carson Reed, Writer

Southwest High School will conduct the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test on Feb. 1 in the morning.

The ASVAB-CEP (Career Exploration Program) test is the variant of ASVAB that Southwest will use to test with. The regular ASVAB test is used to determine combat readiness, useful military skill sets and the work ethic of the student. The ASVAB-CEP variant is similar to the regular ASVAB, however, it involves more career fields and internal questions. The purpose of the ASVAB-CEP is to explore students’ best career field and see where they land talent wise when compared with that career field.

“It’s a great tool for people to use to gauge where their strengths and weaknesses are in certain career areas,” counselor Eric Feeken said. “It might show you where you’re a more hands on type of person as opposed to a book learning person.”

The longest ASVAB test can take up to only 20 minutes to complete. Students are able to send their results to the military, and they will contact the student for different military branches that they’d fit best in. The ASVAB test is not a standardized test and is able to ask students deeper questions that’ll assist where it lands, as shown in the ASVAB overview pamphlet.

“I would say it helps I think for a lot of people who, like a lot of standardized testing you get in school, isn’t this kind of standardized testing,” counselor Anders Peterson said. “This is for a lot of people who feel like they don’t do well on standardized tests.”

If you want to sign up or have more questions please come see or email Mrs. Almond in the counseling office before Feb. 1.
