Set in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, Lincoln Southwest’s production of “Bright Star” will premiere on Thursday, Sept. 25 and run through Sunday, Sept. 28. Performances are scheduled for 7 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. There will be matinee shows at 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
“We have been rehearsing this show since August,” senior Joshua Carl, who plays the character Jimmy Ray, said. “It’s been a race to the finish line because of the quick turn around, but it has been worth it.”
Bright Star follows Alice Murphy, an editor at the Asheville Southern Journal. The plot spans over two time periods, exploring her past love in the 1920s and the impact of a young soldier’s return during the 1940s.
“This show is different from the others,” junior Julia Falcone said. “The ensemble is always on stage and the music is bluegrass so this show is so interesting.”
Tickets for Bright Star are available at Silver Hawk Theatre’s website, silverhawktheatre.com, charging $15 for general admission and $10 for students and alumni. Proceeds from the ticket sales support future shows at the theatre, which can cost tens of thousands of dollars.
“Shows cost a lot of money,” Carl said. “It really helps to get all the money from ticket sales, fundraisers and other events we do around Silver Hawk theatre.”
The production has fostered a good community, especially for new participants. This year’s theme, “Beauty and the Broken,” emphasizes finding positivity amidst conflict, making each performance a unique and enriching experience.
