LSW held their fall honors convocation on Wednesday Sept, 26.

The fall honors convocation honored sophomores, juniors and seniors in the academic top 3 percent of their class, students that had a 4.0+ grade point average (GPA) and students that received an academic letter or pin. It also honored students with perfect attendance and students who made honor roll.

“I got recognized for honor roll, 4.0 GPA, and academic letter,” sophomore Dillon Richert said. “I feel accomplished for receiving a letter, like when you see it in movies and someone gets a letter they are like 78 percent cooler.”

To make the honor roll students need a weighted GPA of 3.5 or above for two consecutive terms which is equivalent to one semester. To get an academic letter students must have a weighted GPA of 4.0 or higher for one whole school year at LSW. The academic pin has the same requirements as the letter. The GPAs required for each one are from the individual semester not cumulative.

“I think honors is a thing where everyone is proud,” Assistant Principal John Matzen said. “As an administrator, I feel proud because it’s my job to help students.”

The convocation did not include freshmen in the mix because they haven’t had the chance to earn final grades at LSW yet. Southwest also holds a honors convocation in the spring for all students, freshmen to seniors, who have met the requirements.
