Success in Silver Hawk Softball
September 24, 2018
The Silver Hawk Varsity softball team has had a winning season so far, with a regular season record of 18-5, and 6-0 in the district under head coach Mark Watt.
The team is currently ranked eighth in the state as well.
The last two games they’ve played have been wins, 13-1 and 8-5 against Bellevue East and Millard South on Saturday, Sept. 22.
“As a team we’ve grown really strong together, and the more we get to know each other the better we play,” Freshman Ellie Grabouski said.
The team has several underclassmen on the roster this year. Some of the girls who made varsity this year are freshmen Ashley Smetter and Ellie Grabouski, along with sophomores Emma Hain, Sylar Pieper and Josie Solano.
“I’d say our biggest strength is when we get in a slump mentally, we can always pick ourselves up. And since we’re really strong as a team, we know that when somebody’s down, we can easily get them back up,” Grabouski said.
While the team is doing well this season, they have had some challenges as well, with a tough loss against Papillion La-Vista on Sept. 15, 3-1.
“Papillion La-Vista was our hardest game this season because last year we lost to them at State, and we all are pretty close with the girls on that team. So when we play them, it’s a really fun game, but we sometimes struggle with staying up,” Grabouski said.
At the moment, Southwest is sitting fifth in the State Softball Championship Predictions from Maxpreps. Last year, the team lost the State Championship against Papillion La-Vista, 16-4.
The Hawks will be back in action at Doris Bair on Tuesday, Sept. 25, at 5:00 pm against Fremont.
