The varsity boys tennis team has two large tournaments coming up: the Westside Invite, which will consist of 10 teams, and the Papillion Invite, which will consist of 23 teams.

The Westside invite will take place next Monday, Sept. 27, at 8 a.m. in Omaha, and the Papillion invite will take place next Wednesday, Sept. 29, at 8 a.m. in Omaha.

“Right now we’re just practicing on off days when we don’t have meets or duels,” Coach Dennis Hershberger said. “We’re just trying to get better as the season goes on.”

The team has done well overall and is a top 5 class A team and the reigning state champions.

“We’re still trying to work on various positions. We’re just going to keep plugging away. We have a pretty young team,”  Hershberger said. “Seven of my 10 guys this year are new to the varsity tennis team. That’s pretty young in terms of varsity experience.”

In a tournament, players play one and two singles and one and two doubles. A singles tennis match is a one-on-one match and a doubles tennis match is a two-on-two match. Six players are allowed to play on varsity at each tournament.

“The season so far has been going pretty good. We had a lot of guys graduate last year so of course, there are some teams that are a lot closer to us than we would have liked,” sophomore Logan Finely said. “Hopefully we can work together as a team to create some separation before the season ends.”
