The varsity boys soccer team went on the road against Grand Island on Monday, April 1, and came out victorious 11-1.
This win marked the Hawks’ seventh win of the season and they remain undefeated. Southwest won because of the mercy rule which states that a game automatically ends if a team is ahead by 10 goals or more after halftime. In addition, the Hawks’ 11 goals is a season-high.
“In my four years of being in high school, I’ve never mercy-ruled a team so that is a good feeling,” senior Tanner Novosad said. “In our pre-game, everyone was making everything (goals) and it transferred over to the game.”
The Hawks 7-0 start is their best since the 2021 season where the Hawks won their first 17 games and ended the season 17-1.
“The locker room has a lot of good vibes, not really guys with big egos and I think everyone is willing to play for each other,” sophomore Miguel Solano said. “Our strong start shows that our team chemistry is good and we can really do a lot of good things if we play for one another and help each other out.”
The Hawks also played Grand Island in the first round of the playoffs in the 2021 season where they won 3-0. Novosad, a freshman at the time, scored one of the goals.
“That was the start of our run to the state final,” Novosad said. “I got to score in my first state game as a freshman so that was pretty cool.”
The Hawks are back on the road against Lincoln Southeast on Wednesday, April 3, at 5 p.m. at Seacrest Field.
