One year ago, the Lincoln Southwest varsity football team started their season with a win over the Lincoln High Links 20-19. Now, they look to repeat that victory against the same team. On Aug 25, the Silver Hawks line up against the Links at Seacrest Field at 7:00 p.m.
First year head coach, Grant Traynowicz, looks to promote unity among his players through their player Leadership Council. Leadership seems to motivate this year’s squad. With long time head coach, Andrew Sherman, leaving the role, Traynowicz looks to keep the team afloat through the coaching change.
“All 11 guys on our Leadership Council have learned how to lead and have stepped up,” Tryanowicz said. “I think it’s been a really smooth transition. I’ve been with Sherman ever since he’s been the head coach. Everyone puts their own spin on things when they’re in charge, but, for the most part, the guys have been used to me.”
After last year’s successful 8-3 season was cut short in the State Championship Quarter-Finals by Omaha Westside 42-28, the Silver Hawks look to have another successful season. This season could end with their first state championship in school history.
“I think our chances of repeating our success are good. I think we have a young team, but I think they can go places,” senior lineman Noah Croghan said. “I think we can go back to the playoffs, and even compete for a state title.”
