The varsity girls soccer team competed against Marian on Saturday, March 23, at Seacrest Field. In a game that came down to the wire, the Hawks won in double overtime 1-1 off of penalty kicks. The Hawks won the penalty kicks 4-2.
“I think we worked really well together as a team and we just showed a lot of grit trying to get through the game,” sophomore Ainsley Roeder said. “Soccer is really about showing grit and who wants it more so a game like that, it was really great to see everyone’s effort.”
The game took an unexpected turn when it started snowing in the second half making the playing conditions different than usual.
“I think we just understand that when we’re playing soccer, we have to play under any condition,” junior Clara Fundus said. “We know that everyone else around us is going to keep playing so we ourselves have to keep playing.”
The four penalty kicks that won the Hawks the game were made by seniors Maddie Schmeling and Charley Kort, junior Maya Stevenson and sophomore Roeder.
“My mindset going into the penalty kick was knowing that I wasn’t going to miss the kick because I couldn’t miss it for my team,” Roeder said. “I also knew that everyone else believed that I could make it so that really helped going into the penalty kick because I had the confidence to take it.”
Fundus, who plays goalkeeper, also made two crucial stops off of Marian’s penalty kicks to help secure the win.
“I trusted my teammates that they were going to make theirs (penalty kicks) and that my job was to save penalty kicks,” Fundus said. “I understood that the pressure is not on me, it is on the kicker, so I was just putting the pressure on the kicker.”
The Hawks will play a home game against Norfolk on Tuesday, March 26, at 5 p.m. at Speedway Sports Complex.
