After starting the 2024 season 8-0, the girls soccer team took on the 9-1 Kearney Bearcats. After leading 3-1 at half, the Silver Hawks were able to close out the game, 4-1, improving to 9-0.
“After we got scored on, I looked around and saw everyone was upset,” forward junior Mallory Arehart said. “But we knew we would score, and we knew that if we kept fighting we’d get our goal back. At halftime we knew we had to keep playing our game that we’ve been playing all season.”
Two of Southwest’s goals were by Arehart. She scored her second and third goal of the season in that game. Her first came in a 5-0 win over Fremont.
The Kearney game drew stark comparisons to other games throughout the season. Earlier in the year, the Silver Hawks pulled out a 1-0 win over Columbus, following it with a shootout win over Marian, both teams have posted winning records this season.
“As the season goes, you improve in a lot of areas. For us, some signs of improvement have been in ball retention and being able to play better collectively,” head coach Thomas Nettleton said. “A very important part of this game was a chance for us to respond by going down a goal, and a lot can be measured from seeing how a team responds to a situation like that.”
The Silver Hawks next game was against the Lincoln Southeast Knights. The Silver Hawks won 4-0. The team now sits at an 11-0 record.
The team has just one regular season game left, against Lincoln Northeast. The game is on Wednesday, April 24 at 5 p.m. at Seacrest Field.
