The varsity wrestling team traveled over state lines for a dual tournament hosted by Manhattan High School, in Manhattan, Kansas. In the Dec. 9 tournament, the Silver Hawks won two duals and lost three, achieving fourth place overall.
“I think we did pretty good, there was some pretty tough competition,” senior Wyatt Davis said. “Our heavyweight was out to start the tournament, and then we lost some more of our guys. Even through the adversity of losing some of our better wrestlers, we still pulled through.”
Losing some valuable team members wasn’t the only challenge the Silver Hawks faced in Manhattan. Facing teams across Nebraska’s southern border was something most wrestlers at Lincoln Southwest had never done before.
“Wrestling teams from Kansas are pretty similar to wrestling teams in Lincoln,” Davis said. “Though we’ve never seen any of those wrestlers or teams before, Manhattan was definitely our toughest competition.”
Though the team lost more than they won, they are still excited to improve over the season in preparation for the state tournament, from Feb. 15 to Feb. 17.
“We have matches on Hudl, so the guys can learn from their mistakes,” head coach Mr. Aaron Finley said. “The idea is to get better in every match, and have it all come together by February.”
The varsity wrestling team has their next meet at the Flatwater Fracas Wrestling Tournament at the Heartland Events Center in Grand Island. The tournament is Dec. 15 and Dec. 16, and matches start at 9:30 p.m. both days.
