The Lincoln Southwest (LSW) dance team, the Emeralds, had a Dance Team Union (DTU) Regionals dance competition in which they earned the titles of Varsity High Kick Champions, Large Varsity Pom Runner Up, and Varsity Spirit Showdown Runner Up.
“I think it was definitely our best performance yet,” senior Olivia McCurley said. “It was awesome when we got first in kick. We were all pretty excited. Getting second to Millard North was really cool because they are super talented and great.”
Starting in July, the Emeralds had practice five days a week during the summer months, and continued into the school year with occasional weekend practices if the head coach, Mrs. Lindsey Hinze, saw fit.
“Practices are the most important part of the team,” Hinze said. “Without practice, there’s no way we would be where we are now. I am very proud of the girls.”
Though the Emeralds doing well in their competition is a victory for the school, many memories were made for the girls on the team. Both practices and competitions have brought the team closer together.
“We all really bonded over obstacles we have to overcome,” McCurley said. “Things like early morning practices, disagreements within the team, and just doing well with our competitions.”
