On Wednesday, Sept. 20. Southwest held their Fall Honors Convocation to recognize academic honors students from the spring semester of the 2022-23 school year. The event was held in the main gym, starting at 8:15 a.m.
“I think it (Honors Convocation) is a really good representation of why students work this hard because it does pay off,” National Honors Society (NHS) member senior Faith Peterson said. “When you are studying for a test, you don’t always see the whole reward of it. The Honors Convocation does a really good job keeping students going. It shows students that they can do this and we’re rewarding them and showing them that this is why they work hard.”
Students dropped their backpacks off in their first-block classroom and proceeded to the Lower D Hall to pick up their name card. Then they took their seats in their respective areas in the gym.
Parents were invited to attend the event and watch their students receive their awards.
“It is important to keep the event structured,” associate principal Mrs. Ashley Turner said. “I have noticed that a lot of these students getting recognized for their academics are eager to get back to class. So keeping on a strict schedule helps us stay on a good timeline.”
Awards went out in order by grade level, starting with seniors. The current grade level being announced sat in folding chairs on the gym floor with the rest of the classes in the student section of the bleachers. As each grade was completed, they and their guests were excused from the gym and the next grade will move to the floor seats.
Guests were also divided by grade level. Those with multiple students were recommended to sit with the group of their lowest grade level student.
Students who were unable to attend the event can pick their honors packet from the main office.
