On Tuesday, Feb. 13, the girls soccer team sourced more than 75 blankets to be donated to the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s Buffett Cancer Center. The team collaborated with Students Together Against Cancer (STAC), Southwest staff and community donations to make the drive possible.
“We’ve had a lot of young ladies and their families go through different bouts of cancer,” Mr. Thomas Nettleton said. “Our focus has always been to support one another and that (the drive) was a way to do that.”
Soccer team members created tie blankets by hand to help supplement the donations. Making tie blankets to donate has been a part of the soccer program for the past three years.
“We have just carried it on and it’s become like a tradition,” junior Clara Fundus said. “It’s nice that we can help others while bonding as a team.”
The Buffett Cancer Center helps house patients while the Nebraska Medical Center conducts research into cancer diagnosis and treatment. The donation will be delivered to the center over Spring Break.
