On Saturday, Feb. 10, the Southwest speech team traveled to the Millard North Invitational to compete against multiple schools. The Hawks placed fourth overall with eight individual finalists, two duo finalists and one group finalist.
“The team was happy with placing fourth but we are ready to work harder this week to finish higher up,” sophomore Brooklyn Shoemaker said. “My favorite part of the competition was being a finalist in both of my events. It’s really exciting because I get to go to nationals now because of it.”
There were 29 Silver Hawks involved in the competition. For each event, individuals or groups performed in three rounds of prelims times before a possible additional finals performance.
“My goal for the rest of the season is to get a second bid,” sophomore Liv Mannschrecak said. “Then I would hopefully qualify for NIETOC (National Individual Events Tournaments of Champions) and that would be awesome.”
The last regular season competition before Districts is this Friday, Feb. 16, at Lincoln East.
