On Saturday, March 9, applications to volunteer over the summer as a camp assistant (CA) for Bright Lights Summer Learning Adventure opened on their website. Bright Lights is a summer learning camp for students in kindergarten through eighth grade. Those who want to volunteer need to be a current eighth grader or older.
“Bright Lights is a good opportunity to work with lots of different people from the community and it’s a very selfless thing to do,” junior Jordyn Davis said. “Working with kids is the best part about being a camp assistant. They are fun, energetic and they lift my spirits.”
Registration to be a CA is open till the end of May. Those who become a CA will help with a full week of camp. There are five weeks that are available to volunteer, June 3-7, 17-21, 24-28 and July 8-12. Individuals can sign up for either a half day, from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. or 1 p.m. – 4 p.m., or have the option to participate in a full day. Individuals will need to have reliable transportation and be able to provide camper supervision. Camps are located at Roper Elementary and other community sites.
“Bright Lights has helped me grow because it made me realize that I want to work with kids when I’m older. It’s helped me with the job I have now, which is working at a daycare,” junior Kaylie Phillips said. “To be a CA you definitely really need to be very patient because you’re working with kids of all ages. They are all going to be at different levels of what they can do and you have to be patient and help them through the process.”
Volunteering at Bright Lights allows individuals to engage with students from all around LPS.
“Volunteering lets me put my energy into other people,” Davis said. “I really like giving an opportunity to help people and make people happy.”
Besides being a CA, Bright Lights also offers the role of office assistant, before and after care assistant and lunch care. Individuals are able to sign up for these positions as well through the Bright Lights website.
“I like being an office assistant because I get to see more of the behind the scenes on what they do in the office,” Phillips said. “It helped me get to know all the staff and all the people in charge.”
