Science Olympiad will hold its first meeting this Wednesday, Aug. 30, after school in room A205. It is an academic club participating in science based competitions.
At competitions, students participate in one or two of the 23 available events, spanning across every branch of science. They compete based on their individual skills, some in research presentations, while others in a demonstration of skill, such as building a rocket.
“We have something for everybody,” group sponsor, Mr. Greg Cooper said. “Anyone interested in science is welcome and encouraged to join the group.”
Competitions begin in October and take place monthly. Students meet at Southwest in the morning and ride to the competition site. Many of the competitions take place in neighboring states.
“We get to travel together, experience new places and opportunities and meet new people,” senior Anastasia Eriksen said. “We collaborate and learn to work well together.”
The group meets weekly. However, students are not required to meet on Wednesdays, they just have to stop in at least once a week to keep Cooper informed on their progress in their particular event.
“You can come any day of the week,” Cooper said. “So long as you are checking in with me and working hard on your events.”
Students with more questions about Science Olympiad should see Mr. Cooper in room A205.
