At Lincoln Southwest, Unified Book Club isn’t just about reading but also about building community and connections. The second Wednesday of each month, students come together in the media center to read books, share stories and make crafts. It creates a space where everyone’s voice matters, learning from each other beyond words can say.
“The most rewarding part of being a part of the Unified Book Club is getting to see all the people,” sophomore Mina Miller said. “I love getting to read and to tell stories. My brother Charlie did book club last year and all years prior. I saw him coming home with things he made and I was very inspired. It made me really want to join.”
The foundation of the club stands on making sure everyone feels seen, included and welcomed.
“The main goal of Unified Club is to create an inclusive and welcoming environment for all individuals of all abilities,” senior Elliana Witt said. “We get in pairs with a partner and an athlete to read books and do crafts.”
Lots of conversations took place to come up with the current thriving club LSW has now.
“The Unified Book Club started three years ago. At the time Ms. Amy Jewell, Ms. Christy Champoux, and I were looking for other Unified opportunities,” Mrs. Michelle Schnell said. “We thought if we could do a Unified Book Club that would give another option for kids to do something.”
At the beginning of the school year you can attend an informational meeting about all unified clubs and sports. At this meeting you will get a form to fill out and can select what activities you are interested in. Then you can turn the form into Brandi Benson the unified sponsor. To join now you can contact our unified activities co-presidents seniors Kaylie Phillips and Witt to help you and answer any questions.
