Southwest’s varsity marching band participated in the Links Marching Contest at Lincoln High School (LHS) on Saturday, Oct. 7. Their performance earned a superior rating, first place in their class and first place overall.
Sophomore Lily Johnston, a flute player, was one of the soloists during the show.
“It’s very nerve-wracking to perform in front of a big crowd like that,” Johnston said. “It was also fun for me to sit and watch the other performances. I liked being able to watch what other schools have been working on.”
Some of the marching band’s success was also due to their appeal toward an audience.
“We’ve added a lot of fun visuals, so it was fun to see those executed in front of an audience,” Mrs. Alyssa Wilhelm said. “We have some really nice impact points and big hits, and they seemed to react well to those.”
In the end, Southwest took home three trophies.
Before the season is over, the varsity marching band will be performing in two more competitions. The next competition will be held at Seacrest Field on Saturday, Oct. 14.
