LPS Simulated Election: Students Get the Chance to Vote
October 30, 2018
On Nov. 1, in second block, students will be participating in a simulated election.
Students will get the opportunity to see what it’s like to vote for governor and senator and house of representatives for the first district.
Having kids get in to the practice of voting, even if it isn’t real, helps to prepare them to be involved in their country and politics later in life.
“We want to model voting as something all citizens should do when they are older,” Psychology teacher Mr. Ryan Salem said. “If we have the kids start seeing what voting is like in fourth grade then when you are older it becomes normal to go and vote.”
The voting is something that the whole LPS district will be participating in. The district does the simulation so kids can be prepared.
“It engages students in what it’s like to vote,” junior Troy Fuehrer said. “For me, personally, the fake voting we do here makes me more inspired to vote when I am older.”
Some students however do not see the effect it has on them.
“The voting is fine but it’s kind of annoying in a sense because I can’t actually vote,” sophomore Izabel Diaz said. “I want my votes to have an effect on stuff but that can’t happen until I am 18 so I do not necessarily love it.”
