Southwest theatre is having an art contest for their spring play, “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.” They are asking that individuals create their own original version of the four Hogwarts crests, Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin. This opportunity is open to everyone.
“For the Harry Potter show we’re doing, we’re not allowed to use any of the original artwork from the movies or books,” theatre director Mr. Austyn McKee said. “We have to come up with our own crest for each of the four houses, so that we can put it on costume pieces and hang it from banners.”
Over the summer, Bright Lights Summer Learning Adventure held a Hogwarts camp at Southwest. Kids from grades third through sixth had the chance to create their own designs to enter into the contest. Senior Jordyn Davis was a counselor at camp and she worked with the kids to help them design crests.
“It’s a really exciting opportunity for them,” Davis said. “Stuff like this doesn’t happen a lot where they can have their designs valued.”
The latest date to submit a design is Sunday, Sept. 1. Participants can email their designs to [email protected]. The winners will be chosen by the theatre officer team.
“If one person excels in all four houses we’ll use that, it’s likely that we will probably mix and match what we like most, and use many designs,” McKee said. “We’re looking for a simplistic creative spin on some of the Hogwarts houses that we’ve seen in the past.”
The winning designs will be chosen in December and featured throughout the play. Individuals can check the Silver Hawk theatre’s media pages for updates.
