Southwest is now allowing students to eat in the media center/library during lunch.

Lunches must be brought from home and eaten in the purple rocking chairs. Students are required to scan their school IDs when entering and exiting the media center. The library will be open for lunch throughout the school year, however, kids must enter through the counseling center doors as the commons’ doors will remain locked throughout the lunch block.

“After learning that other high schools are allowing kids in to eat lunch in their media centers we thought that we’d like to try it as well,” Karen Campbell said. “I think it’s gonna be beneficial to those students that don’t want to go into the chaos of the commons area during lunch and want more of a nice quiet study space just to eat a sandwich and relax.”

Unlike the commons area, there will be no peanut-free zone. The media center offers an alternative lunch location for underclassmen who cannot leave the building to eat.

“It’s nice, it’s quiet,” sophomore Jenna Petersen said. “There’s too many people out there.”

Social distancing rules will remain the same in the media center as in the cafeteria.
