Lincoln Public Schools (LPS) canceled school Jan. 8 – 9 and Jan. 12 – 16 for all students due to winter weather and road conditions. The closures have caused teachers to adapt their assignment and lecture schedules for the beginning of the spring semester.
“I’ve had to think about what is most important in the beginning of the course. Since I’m teaching all AP (classes), AP test dates do not move,” Mrs. Amber Zeilinger said. “We are having to eliminate some of the extra activities that might reinforce some of the skills at the beginning in order to make more time for material we need to cover before the exam.”
Students have also had to adapt to the abrupt schedule change.
“My sleep schedule is not great,” junior Penelope Brown said. “I think it just was a day that I needed to get back in.”
Some teachers have experienced difficulties with getting students to complete assignments over the canceled classes.
“I think students sometimes think, ‘Oh, days off means if I don’t have things done, I’ll just kind of be okay,’” Mrs. Tracy Piper said. “(I’ve been) just reiterating, no, no, no, no, whatever was due will be due whenever we get back.”
LPS allots a total of five built-in school days each year for weather. If more than five are required, the rest of the school schedule will be altered.
