On Friday, Aug. 25, the varsity Silver Hawk football team began their season with a game against Lincoln High School. Behind new head coach Mr. Grant Traynowicz, the Hawks scored a total of 35 points including two touchdowns from freshman starting quarterback Brockston Teply and shut out the Links, 35-0.
“Everybody was hype, there were great attitudes by everyone,” Teply said. “We were working hard.”
With multiple games against in-city opponents to come, the Hawks were determined to continue a win streak throughout the season. The Hawks ended up falling short to Columbus and took their first loss of the season 24-21. Following the loss, the Hawks took on Lincoln East and Papillion La-Vista, two longtime rivals of the Hawks, but lost to the Spartans 28-7 and to the Monarchs 28-14.
Looking to improve their 1-3 overall record, the Silver Hawks had an away game at Omaha Bryan High. After three quarters, the Hawks scored 41 points and were able to beat the Bears after which 41-7. Next, after a loss to Lincoln Southeast 30-14 in the, “Battle of the Souths,” they began to prepare for their Homecoming game against South Sioux City. An 89-yard pick six, thanks to junior Finn McGovern, and two touchdowns, along with 120-plus rush yards from senior Tanner Novosad, helped the Hawks blow it open and win 58-21.
“The team was energetic, everyone was ready to work and compete,” Novosad said. “We started off strong, but it went downhill.”
Ending the season, Southwest lost to Millard West 23-10 and to Millard North 21-10 ending their playoff chances. The Hawks’ final record was 3-6.
