State Journalism for Class A was held at Norfolk on Tuesday, April 23. The people that participated in State Journalism for LSW were junior Lillian Bittle got fifth place for newspaper feature writing, sophomore Lyric Lee got seventh place for yearbook feature writing, sophomore Chloe Wiens got fifth place for yearbook layout and the LSW Talon got third place in yearbook theme development.
“We only had two people competing in writing so two of the people that we were with submitted their sports story or feature story,” Swanson said. “They would have to compete at a specific time, so I tried to give them tips beforehand.”
There were 14 non-preliminary events and 11 preliminary events. Preliminary events were the events that participants had to compete at State Journalism to decide the winner. Non-preliminary events were events where the winners were chosen beforehand.
“At State, I got an hour and 15 minutes to write a feature story. We were given a paper with background and quotes,” Bittle said. “The first 15 minutes there was a problem with music where a song was just playing in our room when we were trying to write. Then the Wi-Fi cut out halfway through which added to the stress of competing.”
Eight people are picked to qualify for each different event at State Journalism.
“It was really fun to be there surrounded by other people and supporting one another in what we do best,” Swanson said. “I also really love to get up to the podium and celebrate our success with all the people around me.”
Awards started at 2 p.m. for State Journalism.
