On Friday, Aug. 18, Lincoln Public Schools sent out a district wide email in response to the heat advisory placed on Nebraska for this week. In Lincoln, temperatures have exceeded 105 degrees Fahrenheit, with the humidity making it feel closer to 115 degrees.
“We really have to consider exhaustion, especially with the freshman players,” freshman football coach Jon Anderson said. “There were some issues with students at Omaha South getting heat sickness a few years ago, so we have definitely become a lot more cognizant of the dangers heat poses.”
Outdoor fall sports moved their practices to before school or indoors. Those sports also faced postponements or had their games canceled altogether.
“All of our practices have been moved inside the gyms,” junior varsity softball player Brooklyn Bruggeman said. “Which is very difficult because we don’t play a gym sport.”
In accordance with district policy, all outdoor classes have been moved indoors as well. Teachers and administration will continue to adapt as conditions change, considering students’ safety with the most importance as the heatwave carries out.
“My outdoor adventure class was supposed to go hiking this week but we have had to stay inside and kayak in the pool instead,” Ms. Amy Carriotto said. “We hadn’t planned to do that for a few weeks but we have adapted and, thankfully, everything worked out.”
