Hawks Battle Bolts and Islanders

Both the boys and girls varsity basketball teams played Pius X, and Grand Island this past weekend.

The boys team struggled last weekend, losing to an undefeated Pius X team, 77-36, where they went 12-34 (35%) on field goal attempts. They followed that up with a loss to Grand Island, 40-45, the next day, where they went 14-55 (25%) on field goal attempts.

“We have had two tough losses this weekend,” junior Ben Hunzeker said. “But we’re getting back from injury and having a full week of practice to work on things we need to build upon based on what we saw this weekend.”

The Boys Basketball team will move on to play a 2-8 Fremont team at home on Thursday at 7:30 PM.

The Girls Basketball team, however, was able to capture a win this weekend. After falling to an undefeated Pius X team on the road, 48-32, they regrouped, and crushed Grand Island, 65-8.

“It feels great to come off a dominating win against Grand Island,” senior Skylar Pieper said. “That was a game where we came together and played as a team. We all wanted the best for each other and that win right there just shows that we all have each other’s backs!”

The girls face a tough test on Friday, however, as they play an 11-2 Fremont team, who beat the Hawks, 60-51, on New Year’s Eve.

“I think as long as we focus on playing basketball the way we know how and trust our teammates, we can beat them,” senior Carly Coen said.
