Over the summer, LPS began to remodel the LSW Family and Consumer Science (FCS) classrooms. Previously, both the culinary and sewing classes occupied the same room, B115, that was divided by a wall. The sewing room has been relocated across the hall to C110 and the culinary room will remain in B115.
The intent behind the remodel was to maximize space and create a more professional environment. When the school was built, a budget was set aside to prioritize the career and technical education department. The FCS classes fall under that category. Before, the culinary room resembled a household kitchen. The new kitchen is set to resemble an industrial kitchen.
“We will have a professional demonstration space rather than built-ins that don’t always work,”
Mrs. Sarah Morrow said. “The space will be bigger and divided between a place to learn and a place to cook which provides fewer distractions during work time and is also more sanitary.”
The new sewing room was complete by the start of the year and classes began as scheduled.
“We really enjoy the new sewing room,” Mrs. Mackenzie Geier said. “There is more space for students to spread out, and once we make all the final adjustments we want, there will be many useful amenities added.”
The original plan was to have the culinary room ready two weeks before the start of the second quarter because second quarter classes are scheduled. While the room isn’t finished yet, it is still set to be completed before the second quarter begins.
“If the room isn’t finished by the time the quarter starts, it should be in a few weeks,” Mrs. Elizabeth Griffith said. “In that case, we plan to frontload the class with bookwork and then spend a few weeks just cooking. In either case, it should not impact the value of students’ education.”
