On Monday, Nov. 4, during block one, students in culinary one class made lentil tacos. The unit that culinary one was in, was all about nutrient dense foods. They talked about animal sources of protein and also plant sources of protein.
“I really enjoyed making the tacos, my favorite part was working with everybody,” sophomore Jayden Mills said. “I think that I will take culinary two. I would consider joining the culinary team if my schedule works with it.”
The tacos were modeled just like a popular American taco with a corn taco shell but substituted the ground beef for lentil. On the side, there were options to add cheese, sour cream, shredded lettuce, cut up tomatoes, salsa and hot sauce.
“Culinary one has a big emphasis on nutrient dense foods, we’re trying to encourage students to try new foods,” culinary teacher Mrs. Elizabeth Griffith said. “We try to teach them that there’s a variety of ways to prepare these types of foods that can be just as delicious as food they get from a restaurant.”
Students who continue through culinary classes also have the option to join the culinary team at Southwest that Griffith runs. Students that want to showcase their skills can have the opportunity to show them during practices and the competitions. Individuals can reach out to Griffith for more information on how to join.
“I want everyone who cares about culinary or may want to pursue it as a career to come and be a part of the club,” Griffith said. “There are competitions and certain eligibility for different events. So there are events for everyone.”
