On Wednesday, Dec. 6, students that have finished a culinary class at Lincoln Southwest had the opportunity to sign up to compete in a variety of competitions to test their culinary skills. The competition took place at The Career Academy (TCA) on 84 Street and the students were there all day.
“It is an opportunity for kids that have participated in culinary one, two, or three to show the skills that they have learned,” Family and Consumer Science teacher Ms. Sarah Morrow said. “There is a knife skills competition, dessert plating competition, cookie decorating competition, salad, sauces and team entree competition.”
Junior Marley Patcher, sophomore Christian Ruiz Florian, senior Riya Danga and junior Grant Sprague were this year’s team entree competition. They cooked garlic jasmine rice with butter chicken and a cucumber salad.
“I hope we do well as a team,” senior Riya Danga said. “Sophomore year was the first year I did the competition and we cooked Indian food and now I am a senior. So I thought it would be good to have a full circle moment.”
Out of 44 participants in the knife skills competition the group had three place top ten, sophomore Mikenna Mason placed 9, sophomore Izzie Kiser placed 6 and junior Sally Almotawn placed 4.
Dessert Plating the group had junior Kyyon Nguyen place first out of 21 participants.
