After school on Thursday, Aug. 31, Hive Helpers is meeting in A105 and making pasta using the plants from their garden.
“In our garden we have basil and other herbs as well as tomatoes,” junior Elizabeth Napolitano said. “We are trying to use the stuff in the culinary garden for the pasta.”
Hive Helpers meets weekly. They currently maintain the culinary garden and the pollinator node at Southwest. During spring and summer, most of the meetings are outside because of the nicer weather. Their goals are to inform the students and staff at Southwest of what they can do for the environment and raise awareness for local and national environmental problems.
“The first meeting was fun,” freshman Camille Davis said. “It was nice because I got to see a lot of my friends that were in it. I joined Hive Helpers because I really like plants and enjoy taking care of them.”
Future meetings could include picking up trash, connecting with other high schools and expanding the gardens.
