On Friday, Sept. 8, senior Max Myers broke the school record for the 5000-meter cross country race. With a time of 15:21, Myers broke Southwest’s previous record, 15:38, which he’d set in 2022. The race took place during the Platte River Rumble Meet at Mahoney State Park.
Class A and Class B teams from the Lincoln and Omaha areas were in attendance at the meet, creating a competitive atmosphere which Myers attributed to some of his success.
“That competition really helped me lock in,” Myers said. “I mainly paid attention to the competition rather than focusing on the time.”
With his time, Myers snagged fourth place.
“He ran the fastest time in school history for any course we’ve ever been to,” head coach Mr. Ryan Salem said. “He took control and really pushed the pace. We’ve never had a person run as fast as he did in the 22 years we’ve been a program.”
The Platte River Rumble was Southwest’s second cross country meet of the year. With Myers’ time in the lead, both the Southwest boys and girls varsity teams placed seventh overall in their races.
