The first two weeks have come to a close, allowing students to settle into their classes and get back into the swing of school. The following is a recap of the first two weeks of the 2018-2019 school year.

Freshman Day

This year, the first day of school was divided into two separate days. Monday marked the first day for freshmen, allowing them to adjust to high school on their own terms without all of the pressure of a school full of students.

“Everything’s nice here, and the teachers are great,” freshman Bryan Valencia said. “Everybody shows you around and stuff.”

On this day freshmen were able to check out their chromebooks a day earlier than the rest of the students.

All Students Day

Tuesday was the first day for all of the upperclassmen. Instead of having a school pep rally like the year before, sophomores, juniors and seniors were instructed to return to their second block class from last year to receive their chromebooks.

“It’s wasn’t bad,” junior Donovan Bitenieck said. “It feels really good to be an upperclassman.”

Once the chromebooks were handed back out, students were then directed to their current first block class to continue the rest of their day.

Sports

Most sports have already competed, excluding softball, which was originally scheduled to compete Monday evening, and then cancelled due to rain. The softball game was later rescheduled to play on Tuesday, but was cancelled yet again due to the rainy weather.

The Varsity football team triumphed against Lincoln North Star on Friday, Aug. 24 at Seacrest Field. The theme for the game was Welcome to the Jungle, where students were encouraged to dress in safari uniforms, animal costumes, and camouflage clothing.

Theater

Lastly, the cast for Lincoln Southwest’s upcoming play, Frankenstein, has been released and posted in the theater hallway. This production is celebrating the 100 year anniversary for the novel written by Mary Shelley, and includes over 100 Lincoln Southwest students working to bring it all together.

With school now fully in session, students can look forwards to more news and events as the year progresses.
