Unified Choir allows students of all abilities to come together through exciting musical activities. As a group, we sing and dance our hearts out every day, strengthening not only our voices but also our ability to connect with one another. Unified Choir creates a supportive environment that builds on the inclusivity program at Lincoln Southwest High School. Because of this, we all know how to have tons of fun in this class!
Unified Choir is one of the classes offered through the Unified program at Southwest. This class allows students with and without disabilities to work together and create a powerful harmony. We sing upbeat tunes and perform our songs during a concert at the end of first quarter.
The class meets in room E121, which is right by the band and music rooms. You can take Unified Choir as a half-block during 4th block in the first semester. Students participate in a variety of musical activities, such as using instruments, clapping to rhythms and making up handshakes at the end of songs.
“My favorite part about Unified Choir is the people and how everybody comes together,” director Samantha Costa said. “They’re from different parts of the school and we build relationships with new friends. We just have a great time.”
We also have funny songs to help warm up our voices. Entertaining warm-ups such as the “Pizza Hut Song,” “Alfred the Alligator” and “Mommy Made Me Mash My M&M’s” are some of our favorites. On Fridays, we get to request whatever songs we want, making it the perfect way to end the week. When the seasons change, so do the warm-ups. For example, Halloween music is used during the fall. Our favorite part about the class is when we have dance breaks!
“It’s just the people that make it so much fun,” Costa said. “Everybody comes in with a really happy, positive attitude.”
By the end of each class, you’ll leave feeling better than when you walked in. Even on hard days, Unified Choir has a way of lifting your mood through the music, laughter and friendships you build along the way.
“My favorite part of Unified Choir is that we have a nice circle,” Senior Claire Bruns said. “It’s very welcoming.”
At Southwest, Unified Choir is a wonderful way to be a part of something meaningful, inclusive and incredibly enjoyable. By making handshakes, singing melodies and dancing, we all have such a blast in this class!
To support our Unified program, we encourage all Southwest students to consider joining Unified Choir. It’s always a highlight of our day. The performance later this year will have a fun surprise with colorful props. On Friday, Oct. 3, feel free to come and support our performance during 4th block! We hope you enjoy the performance!
